High Court of Karnataka is called 'Attara Kacheri' in Kannada. Literally it means eighteen offices or eighteen departments. Attara Kacheri which is a two storied red colored building of stone and brick, built in Greco-Roman style, situated opposite the Vidhana Soudha, at the north-west end of the Cubbon Park. The State Central Library is situated nearby.
In 1864, Commissioner Bowring conceived and prepared the plans for setting up a full-fledged secretariat building. It was earlier known as the Old Public Offices, housing the general revenue and secretariat of the State government. It now has the offices of the High Court of Karnataka. The Attara Kacheri building was completed in 1868 at a cost of Rs 4.5 lakh. The work on the building was executed by Rao Bahadur Arcot Narayanaswamy Mudaliar.
