Kanakapura

Kanakapura is a town and the headquarters of Kanakapura Taluk in the Ramanagara district in Karnataka. Situated near the city of Bengaluru, this town is famous for the production of silk and granite. It is located among the lush green forests of Karnataka and The town is a tourism hotspot and an often visited tourist favorite in the entire state of Karnataka, as it has something for everyone ranging from avid trekkers to history buffs and wildlife enthusiasts.

Kanakapura Fort

Kanakapura is mainly famous for the Kanakapura fort, which was built by Jagadeva Raya. The fort is of great historical significance, but only its remains are present in the town of Kanakapura today, as the fort was burnt down not once but twice. Tipu Sultan, the emperor of Mysore burnt down the Kanakapura Fort, in order to stop the progress of the British Army during the war with the British Empire. The remains of the fort, present near the Arkavathi Bridge, can pique the interest of any tourist with a penchant for historical buildings.

Kanakapura fort was erected by Jagadeva Raya, the chief of Channapatna. The remains of the fort can be now seen near the Arkavathi bridge. The town was twice burnt or laid waste by Tipu Sultan to prevent its being of use to the British army of their march to Shrirangapattana. The place was conquered by Mysore rulers in 1630 A.D. Tipu Sultan was running a huge workshop at Kanakapura with a steel foundry.

Kanakapura has a Government Silk Filature Factory founded in 1943.

A noted landmark of the town is the Rural college founded by Gandhians Gurikar Range Gowda, Advocate K. Subba Rao and social worker/politician S. Kariappa, who built up and managed the institution. Cunchi Falls

Chunchi falls, situated in Mysore, is a waterfall on river Kaveri and is named after a tribal couple Chuncha and Chunchi. Distance from Kanakapura to Chunchi Falls, Kanakapura, Karnataka is 27.9 km and takes around 48 min via Kanakapura-Sangam Road.

Mekedatu is a location along Kaveri in Kanakapura Taluk. Sangama is the place where Arkavati merges with Kaveri. From this point, about 3.5 kilometers downstream, the river Kaveri flows through a deep and narrow gorge. Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace, in Bangalore, India, is an example of Indo-Islamic architecture and was the summer residence of the Mysorean ruler Tipu Sultan. Hyder Ali commenced its construction within the walls of the Bangalore Fort, and it was completed during the reign of Tipu Sultan in 1791. After Tipu Sultan's death in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, the British Administration used the palace for its Secretariat before moving to Attara Kacheri in 1868. Today the government of Karnataka maintains the palace, which is located at the center of Old Bangalore near the Kalasipalyam bus stand, as a tourist spot. As you drive on Kanakapura Road, you will find amidst the rolling green hills a home vibrant with wisdom. At Sri Sri Ravishankar�s ashram, people gather from all over the world to spend time with the Master and to deepen their spiritual experience. Entering its gates, one feels the presence of the Divine. The ashram also provides free education to 600 children. A special attempt is made to locate absolutely illiterate families and a monthly stipend is paid to the girl's parents to encourage them to send her to school.

The ashram boasts of an ayurvedic clinic. Regular Art of Living courses are held, which draw participants from overseas as well. They have a large meditation hall and a hilltop amphitheater, Sumeru, makes a wonderful backdrop for moonlit satsangs with Sri Sri Ravishankar. Visitors treat this ashram as the abode of the Divine. There are rumors that an ancient Shiva temple lies beneath the waters of the lake within the ashram. Others say that the ashram of the Vedic sage Vashistha was on this very site.

Thottikallu Falls

Thottikallu is a place near Bangalore off the Kanakapura road which is famous for a falls called Thottikallu falls, more popularly known as TK falls. A de route at Kaggalipura off the Bangalore - Kanakapura road will lead to a place called Byalemaradadoddi, from where a mud road leads to the falls. The place also has a small shrine. The best time to visit is after the monsoon rains if you visit in this time you can to find the falls in full flow. The place is about one hour from Kempegowda Bus Terminal. A lot of biking expeditions are conducted at this place. This place is surrounded by lush greenery and makes for an ideal picnic spot.
